In a thrilling conclusion to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) emerged victorious, defeating the Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight wickets. The final, held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, saw Hyderabad crumble to the lowest first-innings total in an IPL final, setting a mere 113 runs for Kolkata to chase.
Batting first, Hyderabad struggled from the outset, losing wickets at regular intervals.
Captain
Pat Cummins was the only player to offer some resistance, top-scoring with 24 runs. Kolkata's
bowlers were in sublime form, with Andre Russell taking three wickets, and Harshit Rana and
Mitchell Starc claiming two each. The disciplined bowling attack restricted Hyderabad to a
paltry 113 runs, a target that seemed too easy for a team as consistent as Kolkata.
Kolkata's chase was swift and decisive. Venkatesh Iyer led the charge with a powerful 52,
supported by Rahmanullah Gurbaz's 39. The duo ensured there were no major hiccups, steering
Kolkata to a comfortable victory in just 12 overs. This triumph marked KKR's third IPL title,
adding to their previous wins in 2012 and 2014.
Shreyas Iyer, the winning captain, was effusive in his praise for his team. "This is what we
demanded from the team and every individual stood up to the occasion," he said. "We played like
invincibles throughout the season and there is so much to cherish right now. The performance has
been flawless throughout. All the guys stepped up and made it easy for us to win the game."
In contrast, Pat Cummins, the Hyderabad captain, acknowledged his team was outplayed. "I thought
they bowled fantastically. Starcy turned it on again. [Just] not enough [runs] tonight. [We
were] totally outplayed," he reflected. "If we got 160 we would have felt we were in the game.
It was a real pleasure working with some of the more experienced guys and lots of young talent
throughout."
The final also saw standout performances that earned individual accolades. Harshal Patel
claimed
the Purple Cap for the highest wicket-taker of the season with 24 scalps. Sunil Narine, awarded
the IPL 2024 MVP, celebrated his third MVP title, praising his team's effort and the collective
hard work that culminated in their title win. "Coming to the ground today it felt like [the]
2012 final. The feeling is overwhelming. I couldn’t ask for a better birthday gift," Narine
said, acknowledging the critical early wickets that set the tone for their victories.
Meanwhile, Virat Kohli took home the Orange Cap, having scored 741 runs in the season. This
marked his second time winning the prestigious accolade for the top run-scorer in the IPL.
